School holidays: the phrase that strikes fear into the hearts of even the most organised parents.
For many families, school holidays require some creative logistics. But for parents of children with complex needs, the planning takes on another layer entirely. It’s not just about finding care — it’s about finding the right care: a safe, supportive environment with people who understand your child and can meet their needs with patience, skill, and compassion.
We count ourselves incredibly lucky that Elias’ former childminder still has space (and the energy!) to look after him during school holidays. Their familiarity with him, their understanding of his care needs, and their genuine affection for him is a gift we don’t take for granted. But as grateful as we are, we know it’s not a permanent fix. And this Easter, for the first time in a while, they're taking a well-deserved break.
Cue mild panic.
Like many families, we’ve had to face the reality that short-term solutions aren’t always sustainable. So what happens when your go-to person isn’t available (besides weep into our coffee)? Here are a few places to start:
Helpful Resources for Holiday Childcare (That Don’t Involve Cloning Yourself):
These legends help you find inclusive activities near you, with advice for applying and what to expect.
Because sometimes the only thing scarier than the school holidays is the cost of surviving them.
They provide financial support for breaks — from family holidays to a few precious hours of quiet.
Offering fully trained staff and inclusive environments where your child can thrive (and you can breathe).
A one-stop-shop for local clubs, support services, and activities tailored to your child’s needs.
Of course, finding holiday care isn't just about plugging a childcare gap, it's about ensuring your child has a joyful, stimulating, and safe experience. And it's about making sure you don’t burn out either. These organisations are doing amazing work, but it still takes a village, and sometimes a spreadsheet with multiple tabs.
And look, if you’re reading this while mentally planning meals, care rotas, and also trying to remember where you hid the chocolate from the kids, you’re doing great. Truly. Whether you’ve lined up the perfect activities or your plan involves a blanket fort and surviving on toast, we see you.
This Easter, we’ll be taking it one day at a time, embracing the chaos, celebrating the small wins, and sending love to every parent navigating the school holidays with a child who needs a little extra support.
